Understanding Frequency Distribution

Count how often values occur, compare categories, and build histograms for numeric columns.

The Frequency Analysis page shows how often each value occurs in a selected column. It works with any column type and is most useful for categorical, boolean and numeric data.

Frequency table

  • Count — number of records with that value. Values are trimmed of surrounding spaces before counting.
  • Percent — share of non-missing values. Missing values are reported separately and are not included in percentages.
  • Cumulative percent — running total of the percent column in the current sort order.

Sort by count (highest or lowest first) or by value (A–Z or Z–A; numeric values sort numerically). To keep long lists readable, choose a Top N limit: the remaining values are grouped into a final Other row.

Histogram

For numeric columns, the histogram groups values into equal-width bins between the minimum and maximum.

  • The default number of bins follows Sturges' rule (⌈log₂ n⌉ + 1). You can change it.
  • Each bin includes its lower edge and excludes its upper edge, except the last bin, which includes the maximum.
  • If all values are equal, a single bin is shown.

Filtering by period

When the dataset has a date column, you can restrict the analysis to a date range to compare distributions across periods.

Exporting

Use Export CSV to download the frequency table. See Exporting Analytical Results.
